After Pushpa’s stupendous run in the North, the South followed it up with super-hit ventures like SS Rajamouli’s RRR, Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 and Kamal Haasan’s Vikram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At frequent intervals, South films have been clawing their way into the North belt, a territory that’s occupied by Bollywood. For several decades, Bollywood is what came to everyone’s mind when talking about Indian cinema and South was boxed as regional cinema only. But, no more. As every actor says, the lines have been blurred. There’s no Bollywood or regional cinema anymore. There’s only Indian cinema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, are we getting only superhits from down South that go on to make Rs 500-Rs 1000 crore at the box office? The answer is a big no. For every KGF 2, there’s a Radhe Shyam. In 2022,Jr NTR-Ram Charan’s RRR took the box office by storm and its lifetime collection now stands at around Rs 1000 crore. Similarly, Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 garnered a phenomenal response across the globe and collected a whopping Rs 1,200 crore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, though didn’t fetch the same kind of response in every language it released, managed to gross over Rs 400 crore at the box office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Films like Beast, Valimai, Bheemla Nayak, Sarkaru Vaari Paata, Don, Bheeshma Parvam, Hridayam, 777 Charlie, James and Jana Gana Mana weren’t as big as RRR, KGF 2 and Vikram. However, the above-mentioned films went on to rake in the moolah in their respective languages. Bollywood is going through a rough phase. Only a handful of films like JugJugg Jeeyo and Bhool Bhulaiyya 2 are minting money. However, there’s a misconception that all South films are taking over the box office. The truth is, for every big hit, there’s a bigger flop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Take, for example, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Acharya. The film brought together Megastar Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan, who was basking in the success of RRR. Yet, the film flopped at the box office. Similarly, Prabhas’s Radhe Shyam turned out to be a damp squib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Naga Chaitanya’s Thank You suffered the same fate in theatres.. Director Lingusamy and Ram Pothineni’s The Warriorr, which was promoted as a pan-India release, was a disaster as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kannada film Bairagee starring Shivarajkumar and Mohanlal’s Aarattu have been considered flops in their own languages. So, what dies that say about South cinema’s success rate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2022 will see more big-budget films releasing in theatres. Some of them include Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan and Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger. Will these films turn the tide for South with a better success rate? Let’s wait and watch.
