Sudhir Suri, the president of the Shiv Sena (Taksali), was murdered as a result of hate crime. The incident has not been linked to any organization so far. It came to light when Sandeep Singh, alias Sunny, was interrogated on the spot with the murder weapon, after he gunned down Suri. The case is still being investigated by a five-member special investigating team (SIT). Seven days are left on Sunny’s remand.
Though Canada-based gangster Lakhbir Singh, alias Landa Harike, claimed responsibility for the killing, the police have not yet found any gangster connection to the killing, saying Suri was on the hit list of a radical group because of his remarks against a community. Punjab Police have been investigating Landa and Harwinder Singh Rinda’s module for the past year and a half, including their involvement in the RPG attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali.
Sources told police that Landa had claimed responsibility for the murder only to “spread fear” about his extortion business. The call details and interrogation of the prime suspect did not reveal any connections between Sunny and any gangster module.
Many people or organizations claim responsibility after such incidents. All aspects of the murder are being investigated by the police. Police Commissioner Arun Pal Singh said the SIT is conducting an evidence-based investigation.
