At Rashtrapati Bhawan here, President Draupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Supreme Court judge and CJI-designate Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud.
He is the son of former Chief Justice of India Y V Chandrachud, who served from February 22, 1978 to July 11, 1985.
In 2024, Justice Chandrachud will serve as Chief Justice for two years. Judges of the Supreme Court retire at 65 years of age.
As of October 11, he succeeded Uday Umesh Lalit, who had recommended him for the position. He was appointed CJI on October 17 by President Draupadi Murmu.
On May 13, 2016, Justice Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959, was elevated to the top court.
As a member of several Constitution benches and landmark verdicts of the Supreme Court, he has dealt with issues related to Ayodhya land dispute, privacy, and adultery.
Additionally, Justice Chandrachud served on the bench that partially struck down Section 377 of the IPC, the validity of the Aadhaar scheme, and the Sabarimala issue in a series of landmark judgments.

During the COVID-19 crisis last year, the Justice Chandrachud-led bench gave several directions to ease the misery of people.
Earlier this month, he was one of two judges who spoke out against the method of “circulation” adopted for eliciting the views of members on the appointment of judges to the top court.
Until his appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on October 31, 2013, he served as a judge of the Bombay High Court.
The Bombay High Court designated Justice Chandrachud as a senior advocate in June 1998 and he became Additional Solicitor General the following year.
A graduate of St Stephen’s College, New Delhi, Justice Chandrachud obtained an LLB degree from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, and obtained both an LLM degree from Harvard Law School and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School.
A visiting professor at the University of Mumbai, he practiced law at the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court.
