According to a JP Morgan analysis, Apple will move 5 percent of its new iPhone 14 production to India by the end of the year, and 25 percent by 2025 as India increases local manufacturing.
The production process for Apple’s new iPhones in India this year has been shortened by six weeks or so from the production cycle in China earlier this year, according to analysts.
Apple iPhone 15 may be manufactured simultaneously in China and India by Foxconn and Wistron next year.
Historically, India’s iPhone supply chain has been limited to legacy models. According to the JP Morgan report, Apple has instructed EMS vendors to manufacture iPhone 14/14 Plus models in India within two to three months of the start of production in Mainland China.
According to the report, these shorter intervals indicate that India has become more important in iPhone production, and that more iPhones will likely be manufactured in India in the future.
The iPhone Pro series is more complex to align the camera modules (done by EMS vendors) and the iPhone 14 series (tax savings) is more popular in the Indian market, according to the report.
This year, Apple’s ‘Make in India’ iPhones will account for about 85 percent of its total iPhone production for the country due to ease of doing business and friendly manufacturing policies.
It is estimated that Apple will produce more than 12 million iPhones in 2022 with the iPhone 14 series, marking an increase of more than 71% (year-on-year).
