The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has decided to vote for the Congress candidate in Maharashtra for the Rajya Sabha elections to be held on Friday.
Imtiaz Jaleel, a Lok Sabha member from Aurangabad and member of AIMIM, made the announcement hours before the election, which was set to begin at 9 am.
‘Our two AIMIM Maharashtra MLAs have been asked to vote for @INCIndia candidate @ShayarImran for the Rajya Sabha. We wish him well! For the Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra, our party @aimim_national has decided to support Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). However, we will continue to disagree on politics and ideology with @ShivSena, which is a partner in MVA along with @INCIndia and @Maha_speaks_ncp,’ Jaleel tweeted.
The Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra will witness a contest for the first time in more than two decades as seven candidates vie for six seats.
Voting will be conducted between 9 am and 4 pm.
Elections are decided by the 288 members of the Legislative Assembly. There are now 285 votes because there is a vacancy due to the death of Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke, and a special court on Thursday rejected the plea filed by former minister Anil Deshmukh and minister Nawab Malik seeking a day’s bail to vote in the elections.
